The seven days of the week
Learn the weekday as a complete expression: thứ hai means Monday, not Tuesday. The sequence continues through thứ bảy for Saturday; Sunday has the name chủ nhật. To ask which weekday it is, use Hôm nay là thứ mấy? The answer Hôm nay là thứ tư means today is Wednesday.

Read dates in day–month order
Ngày introduces a day of the month and tháng introduces the month: ngày hai mươi tháng sáu is June 20. A full written date usually follows day, month, year. When a numerical date might be ambiguous, write the month in words or confirm it aloud. A weekday and a date are different answers: thứ sáu is Friday; ngày sáu is the sixth day of a month.
Use the calendar to make a plan
Hôm nay means today, ngày mai means tomorrow, and hôm qua means yesterday. Start with a time phrase and a familiar action: Ngày mai tôi học tiếng Việt means tomorrow I study Vietnamese. Try naming the day you will study next, then change it to a different weekday. Vietnamese does not need an English-style verb ending to make that time clear.

- What day of the week is it today?
- Hôm nay là thứ tư.
- Today is Wednesday.
- Hẹn gặp bạn ngày mai!
